Athens - Cocoa Beach - Folkston Loop

Whenever I take a driving trip to see Jeff and his family in Florida it usually involves a stop to pick up Clarence in Athens, Georgia then we go and spend time in Cocoa Beach and then drive to Folkston, Georgia to visit Fred and Leah Mershon before heading back to Athens.

That brief introduction to the “loop” doesn’t even begin to tell everything we do and see continuing to make shared memories that Clarence, Fred and I started making back in the ‘60’s.

I spent a couple of days in Athens first while Clarence had some appointments. He was still recovering from shoulder surgery. One of the first things I had to do after being on the road over a week was get to the laundromat. I got in some running before we hit the road too.

It goes without saying that the beach plays a big part in where and how we spend our time when we visit Cocoa Beach. We also have some places that we try to visit to eat and drink whenever we get down there. The Sandbar is a favorite. We used to really enjoy the Pier but it’s just not the same since a corporate takeover and our favorite bar tender leaving. We discovered a new place real close to where we usually stay the last time we were all down. Rock the Guac outstanding food especially good to order and take back to eat at the pool.

I also like to take Jeff and his family to the Island to eat at least once when we’re there. The food is decent, the beer is cold and if you can sit on the patio it’s really nice.

On the day we left Cocoa Beach to head north we stopped and I had my first ever Wawa on our way to visit Jeff and Rochelle’s property near San Augustine. It was fun having them show us what they’ve already planted and planting some coffee trees. Then they headed to the beach while Clarence and I continued north to Folkston.

When we got to Folkston it was the same as always good friends, good food, good 60’s music, an amazing amount of laughing, shared memories and to much drinking. As Clarence put it we even got “sailor drunk” a couple of times on this trip not something I would recommend. Whew! 😳

I ran the Gate River 5K in Jacksonville while I was in Folkston and got out most days and ran in there development. Fred’s daughter Jill (Stacey) is trying to talk everyone into doing Gate River this next March. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

The next night they hosted an oyster cookout. Count me out on the oysters but there was plenty of other good food, friends and drink.

Some of the most fun we had was when Leah found some of Fred’s old pictures and we talked about old times as well as our friends no longer with us. Some of the pictures from boot camp were really special.

It was a good trip within a trip that even included a race.
