Continuing East

After an overnight stay in Las Cruces I drove to Granbury, Texas to see an old high school teammate and friend Don O’Brien and his wife Gladys. Don and I hadn’t seen each other in almost 50 years and while Gladys and I had never met we were pen pals when I worked at Camp Cedar Canyon with Don the year he and I received our Eagle Scout award there, 1966. It was fun finally meeting her and Don and I had a great time catching up.

Don and Gladys had a beautiful home and he made sure I had Texas bar b que one night and a crazy thick steak the next. Don May be from Massachusetts like me and graduated high school and college in California also like me but he is Texan through and through. They had some beautiful Mustangs including one of the first Shelbys off the line.

Don was my sister Donna’s date for her Girls League Formal and I went with her best friend Penny Smith. As it turned out Penny lived in Dallas not to far from Don and not to much out of the way to my next stop, Vicksburg National Park. We were able to connect and meet for breakfast the day I was leaving Texas. It was fun seeing her after so many years.

I spent a lot of time driving through and walking around at Vicksburg. So much history...

After leaving Vicksburg on Friday I drove to Alabama so that I could do a race there on my way to Clarence’s in Athens, Georgia. I hadn’t raced in Alabama yet and since I traveled across the south from San Diego this was a good chance to check it off.
